Helping

Helping

Here are a few jobs that need to be done for the good of the club:

Print and post the AmesLUG Flyer that our esteemed VP created.
Invite a friend to the next meeting
Help sketch out a basic club constitution
Offer to share your expertise and present the program (or organize an activity) for an upcoming meeting
Write up a press release to announce the club
Get the club listed in Dmoz and the LUG lists and link to it from your own homepage
Create a one page pdf poster that can be posted around ISU and city bulletin boards
Dues

AmesLUG will be posting information here soon about dues and financial contributions to the club, but not before we iron out all the rules and establish a club constitution so that we’re all comfortable about how these funds will be handled.

Programs

Programs

uncle sam pictureEach meeting will generally have a “Program” which is the entertainment for the group. This can be an activity, a speaker with slides or visual aids, or an expert in a subject of interest or even a video.

This page exists mostly as a brain-dump where we can post program ideas, so that members can stop by, grab one, and say “Yea, I can do a program on that!”

Ideas

Biographical talk on the FSF and RMS (or, the history of three letter mysterious acronyms)
How to make a living with free software
How I got Grandpa using GNU/Linux

If you would like to do a program on any subject that would be of interest to the group, please contact Matthew Steven (click the “Contact” tab while logged in).

November, 2012 Meeting
This month’s meeting will be at a new place on a new day of the week, at the same old time:

Friday, November 16, 2012 at 7:30pm at the Ames Makerspace.

Location of the Ames Makerspace: 328 Main Street, Suite 15, Ames, IA

We will discuss elections, restructuring, new ideas and rehash some old ideas while we’re at it.

2011-12-08 Minutes (delayed)
When we first started recording AmesLUG presentations, it was thought that the process to bring the videos to the internet would be simple and streamlined. Alas, that was not the case, and now, 10 months later, we finally have the video of our President giving a presentation on Open Source Astronomy Software. It’s about 38 minutes long. Enjoy.

Future Meetings
Due to the Ames Public Library being in a degraded state of operation during reconstruction they do not have meeting rooms available in the coming months.

The Ames Maker Space is willing to allow us use of their location for AmesLUG meetings. However, they already are meeting every Thursday at 7PM, and on the 3rd Saturday at 3PM. Thus we need to reschedule our monthly meeting to avoid those times/days.

Election Results
The election for 2011-2012 was held Oct 13, 2011 and the results were:

President: Jonathan Kollasch
VP: Scott Prader
Pressmaster: Paul Cowley
Secretary/Treasurer: Brad Boeckmann

Past President Matt Steven conducted the election, and hopes that the club will shuffle the officer roles annually so that the work doesn’t all fall on one person for too long!

2011-08-11 Minutes
At the August meeting of AmesLUG, people showed up with various pieces of computer hardware that generally works well with Open Source Software to buy, sell or trade.

Not everything was sold, so some people held onto some things. If you’re ever looking for a spare keyboard, motherboard or fan, don’t hesitate to ask at a future meeting. Someone might just have what you’re looking for!

Ames LUG – Ames IA’s Free / Open Source UNIX Group
uncle sam picture
Officially, AmesLUG exists to promote free software and open source software in the Ames area, encourage both professional and hobbyist involvement, and educate others about free software.

But really, it’s a bunch of geeks having a good time.

AmesLUG is open to everybody, even if you only just heard of Linux, BSD, or even Firefox, and wonder what all the fuss is about. Free software puts you in the driver’s seat.

Mark your calendar for the next meeting and join us!
